Comparison
Should you just use a website builder?
Often, yes. If you’ve got a few hours, simple needs and you don’t mind doing it yourself, a builder will get you online and there’s no good reason to pay anyone. We’d rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise.
This page is for anyone weighing us up against Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy, IONOS or a similar builder. Here’s where the honest line sits.
A builder is probably right for you if
- You need something online this week and it doesn’t have to be perfect.
- Your site is a few pages that rarely change.
- You enjoy fiddling with it, or you’ve got someone in the business who does.
- You’d rather pay a small amount every month than a larger amount once.
It’s probably the wrong choice if
- The hours are the expensive part. A builder is cheap in pounds and expensive in evenings.
- You want it to look like your business rather than like a template.
- You need it to actually work properly on a phone, not just technically fit.
- Nobody in the business wants to own it, and it’ll quietly go out of date.
Three things worth knowing before you sign up
The price you see isn’t the price you pay
Most builders advertise an introductory first-year rate that goes up when it renews. Check the renewal figure, not the headline, and check what happens to your domain.
You’re still the one building it
The software is the easy part. Deciding what goes on the page, writing it, and getting the photos is the work. And that part doesn’t get done by a template.
Moving later is harder than starting
Sites built inside a builder generally can’t be exported as a whole and taken elsewhere. If you outgrow it, you start again.
What we do instead
We build the site for you, from scratch, around what your customers are actually trying to find out. You answer some questions on a call and look at it before it goes live. Pricing is quoted per project after that call.
You own the site. It isn’t tied to any software of ours.
Not sure which makes sense for you?
Tell us what your business needs and we’ll tell you honestly if a builder would do the job.
